THE IMPORTANCE OF SET DESIGN.

It is of no doubt that the word, “Set design” paints the image of a stage / theatre in one’s mind when mentioned. 

Set design simply put, is the creation of the physical space in which the action of a performed event takes place. It is considered an essential part of visual production of a film, tv or theatrical work.

It includes the scenery, furniture, props, appearance and overall look of the stage.

A set is designed in such a way that it fits in the context of whatever is being portrayed in a particular scene. 

Now what makes set design so important? Why does it play a vital role in the industry? Let’s take a look at the following;

• The overall look of any set gives the audience information about the concept of an act that is to be performed. A properly designed set, portrays the tone and personality of the show.
• A good reputation can be sustained with an amazing set design. An aesthetically pleasing and attention-grabbing scenic design can pass as a form of branding and good PR strategy for tv, film or show.
• A good set design communicates. It could be themes and symbols, period of a play and its setting. For example, a set design that shows withered plants and dead trees can suggest a theme of decay.

In general, one would say set design is important as it supports the style of production and brings life to a performance.
