For different pictures, different reactions.
You see a picture and your mind goes Wow! Iconic! Powerful! Sensational! Sad! Disturbing! And a whole lot of reactions you can think of.
Ever wondered why?
Pictures are more than just a combination of colors, objects, people, nature or animals. Pictures are very powerful tools that carry emotions and can be interpreted in different ways to different people. This goes to show that photography, if utilized positively, can foster a change in society.
It is recorded in history, in the 19th century, that Black Americans used photography to combat racist caricatures and represent the black experience accurately.
In our world today, photography will birth a positive social change through the following ways,
1. Raising awareness on social issues: changes can only be effected when the reason for a thing is known. Images are a very fast means of communication. Hence the use of photography will help communicate issues affecting society.
2. Documentation: pictures immortalize events and serve as proof of occurrences. Keeping records of societal happenings through photography will help preserve history and enlighten generations to come.
3. Communicate perspective: one thing that makes life beautiful is diversity. To everyone their own interpretations, their own point of view. Images give people an avenue to air their views based on their own perception of societal happenings. Hence, telling their stories and changing the narrative.
