What is a Clapperboard?

A clapperboard is a device for synchronizing audio and visual components during the production of a scene in filmmaking. With details such as the scene number, take a number, and other details relevant to the production written on it, the clapperboard is usually operated by the Clapper Loader or Second Assistant Camera.

During production, a working clapperboard will feature the following: 

Roll/Reel number.

Take number.

Scene number.

The Purpose of a Clapperboard.

Communication: The clapperboard functions as a visual signal for the production team. It indicates the beginning of a shot, which helps the director, actors, and coordinate their actions and timing.

Scene/Take Identification: The scene number or Take number written on the clapperboard helps the editors to easily identify specific scenes and takes and it makes the editing procedure more efficient.

Continuity: The clapperboard helps maintain continuity in filmmaking by marking the beginning of each take. It helps ensure consistency in performance, camera angles, and other visual details.
