4 WEEKS PROGRAM

This is a hands-on, lecture-light, activity-heavy class experience. This course aims to teach specific fundamental techniques associated with the directing process. This course covers the role and responsibilities of a filmmaker in script development, pre-production, production, and post-production.
Students learn to tell a story cinematically, use the camera as a tool, prepare a script analysis and engage in the casting and rehearsal process with actors.

It provides students with the knowledge and practical experience to work with Production Designers, Cinematographers, Post-Production and Visual Effects Supervisors, Producers, and Assistant Directors collaboratively and effectively that supports the film and the creative process.

The course also provides students with the necessary observation, evaluation, exploration and thinking tools required to ensure that optimal direction and best performances are realized on set. Both creative and fiscal management techniques from a directorial perspective are covered so that directors fully comprehend the opportunities to effectively use pre-production, production, and post-production as distinct stages in bringing their vision to life.

COURSE OUTCOME

Upon completion of the course, the successful participant should be able to:

  • Analyze scripts and prepare an approach to the material.
  • Audition and cast actors who will best serve the script and the director’s vision.
  • Plan shot selection and coverage that will best express the narrative intent of each scene and the importance of each scene in telling the story.
  • Maximize post-production results.
  • Plan and utilize all production elements available to ensure maximum results.
  • Lighting, sound, sets and/or locations, set dressing and props, wardrobe and makeup.
