Every generation, a handful of creatives emerge to shape the course of an entire sector. Actress, producer, businesswoman, and Del-York Creative Academy alumna Lilian Afegbai is one of the voices driving the expansion of Africa’s film and entertainment industries. Her career is a tribute to the kind of quality DCA works to foster throughout the continent and demonstrates the power of skilled ability meeting opportunity.
Lilian’s career in film started with acting, where she soon made a name for herself as a self-assured and captivating on-screen persona. She has made multiple appearances in Nollywood films and television shows over the years, earning a reputation for her great character interpretation, emotional range, and charisma on screen. However, her development didn’t end there. Lilian expanded her abilities into film production, which was a pivotal moment that would redefine her influence in the industry, just as many creatives had been influenced by holistic training.
Bound, her first feature picture, was an important turning point. In addition to demonstrating her dedication to excellent storytelling, the movie won her the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA) for Best Indigenous Movie (Igbo). This accomplishment showed vision, craft clarity, and a profound comprehension of the power of culturally grounded stories for a first-time producer. It also, in many respects, represented a new generation of young filmmakers taking charge of their stories and elevating Nollywood’s artistic standards.
As a Del-York Creative Academy alumnus, Lilian’s story is particularly impactful because it so closely reflects the principles that have guided our school. Her move from actor to producer exemplifies DCA’s goal of developing creatives who not only perform but also create, direct, and mould the business. She embodies a generation of African storytellers who are creating stories that connect locally and gain acclaim on global stages; this is the kind of creative leadership that DCA is dedicated to fostering.
Lilian is now one of the alumni demonstrating how creative aspiration and organized training can transform Africa’s cultural output. Her work continues to inspire young actors, directors, and producers, who now turn to her as proof that genuine African stories can command respect and attention on a global scale when delivered skillfully and intentionally. The future of African storytelling is also more promising, daring, and uniquely ours as more DCA alumni emerge to direct projects, mold stories, and have an internal impact in the industry.
Teaching technical skills has never been our only objective at Del-York Creative Academy. The goal is to empower visionaries, those who will determine how Africa tells its tales and how the world interprets them. Through their work, leadership, and dedication to excellence, alumni like Lilian Afegbai exemplify that objective every day.
