HOW TO COME UP WITH A GREAT STORY.

Humans are almost very quick to criticize, I guess we can all attest to this, right?

You have probably heard and made both positive and negative criticisms about a movie while seated at the cinema or from the comfort of your home. “Oh I bet I could have done better!” “Whoever wrote this script did a lazy job” “Oh I absolutely loved the plot of this movie” “Damn, this film has no direction” and lots more.

The truth is, it takes a level of creativity to come up with movie ideas and great stories. Oftentimes, the secret to writing marketable stories is by thinking of how movies work, then working backwards from there.

In this article, we will be mentioning a few ways to get your mind moving!

1. Understand the essentials of a movie idea, start by mixing and matching these three key elements; setting, character and conflict. Most people get stuck because they try to come up with the entire movie all at once.
2. Set out time to think and brainstorm ideas; ideas could come from the little things. Go for a walk, get on a bus, read journals,books,newspapers, see a movie, pay attention to happenings in your life and your environment, find inspiration in real life then go ahead to put these pieces together and there you have it. 
3. Decide on a genre; this guides your plot, giving you focus for brainstorming. The beauty of a genre is that it gives you a direction to work with.
4. Steal from the classics; tweak existing movies into something original. Think of how you can change or twist something you enjoy into something new. Remember, no idea is 100% completely original.
5. Dig into history, pick a public figure , you might as well explore a local legend!
6. Finally, create a logline to cement the story/idea; a logline is a one or two sentence summary of your script. A good logline sparks an emotional hook to create interest.
